Green Flag and Leamington Society awards
Green Flag for Jephson Gardens
Jephson Gardens has achieved its tenth Green Flag Award. The independently-judged award looks at the maintenance, cleanliness, safety, and sustainability of Britain’s parks. Jephson Gardens has won the award every year since 2006 and is among a record-breaking 1,686 parks and green spaces that will receive a prestigious Green Flag Award this year.
Leamington Society Awards
Warwick District Council’s parks also had success at the Leamington Society Awards. The awards take place every two years to recognise projects which have enhanced the physical environment of Royal Leamington Spa.
The Sensory Garden and East Lodge Garden, both in Jephson Gardens, won awards. They were an instant hit with visitors when they opened in 2015. The Sensory Garden uses all of the senses - hearing, sight, smell, taste and touch - and was featured on the BBC show 'The Instant Gardener' earlier this year. East Lodge Garden is an insect-friendly garden and has a resident beehive. It is the home of a gazebo from the Leamington entry to the 2014 Chelsea Flower Show.
Two projects in Stamford Gardens (off Rugby Road) also won awards. A mural and bespoke gates were created in 2014 to reflect the character of the area. The mural was painted by local artist Izumi Segawa and the gates were created by Ironcraft of Leicestershire.
The Chair of Warwick District Council, Councillor Jane Knight commented: "We are absolutely thrilled that our stunning parks and gardens have once again received the highest of national and local accolades. I would like to play tribute to the tireless work and endless talent of the Warwick District Council Green Spaces team in creating and maintaining these wonderful spaces for everyone to enjoy. The school holidays are approaching and we have lots of events and activities planned in our parks and we very much hope you will be able to join us."
