Government announces a pause on Local Government Reorganisation (LGR)

The Government has announced a review of its Local Government Reorganisation programme following updated legal advice.
Warwickshire is one of 14 areas where proposals will be reviewed and paused while the Government considers whether the process is legally robust and aligned with its priorities.

The government has announced its decision to form two new Councils in Warwickshire: one in the north, and one in the south.
Under the decision, one unitary council will cover the north of Warwickshire, including North Warwickshire, Nuneaton and Bedworth, and Rugby. A second unitary council will cover the south of Warwickshire, including Stratford-on-Avon and Warwick.
All six councils (including Warwickshire County Council) will be abolished, with both new councils coming in to effect on 1 April 2028.
