Residents tracking their active and sustainable travel as part of the Choose How You Move in Warwick District challenge can earn themselves a free 7-day leisure centre pass.

The pass covers the leisure centres at St Nicholas Park in Warwick and Newbold Comyn in Leamington.

The Choose How You Move challenge currently runs until Monday 8 August and is completely free to join and participate in. It aims to encourage residents across the District to get active and choose a sustainable means of travel when out and about anywhere in the District - whether in their local area or when visiting and supporting the town centres.

Participants earn ‘BetterPoints’ for each sustainable journey they make, which can be converted to high street vouchers to redeem in favourite of big name or independent shops or donated to a range of charities including Warwickshire Pride and The Myton Hospices.

And now participants can redeem their points for a 7-day pass to the District’s leisure centres, accessing fitness suites, classes, and public swimming sessions for free for a whole week.

Councillor Alan Rhead, Cabinet member for Climate Change, said: “Choosing active and sustainable travel not only benefits the air quality in the District, it’s also a great boost to your health and fitness.

“This latest incentive gives you the chance to experience the first-class leisure facilities at Newbold Comyn and St Nicholas Park so if you’re looking to stay active over the next few months, make sure you’re tracking your travel and earning those points.

“I would like to thank Everyone Active for their contribution which hopefully will encourage more of our residents to participate in the Choose How You Move challenge."

Gareth Wagg, Everyone Active contract manager said: “This is a fantastic initiative, not only working to encourage the local community to actively contribute to reducing the carbon footprint of their local area, but also giving them an opportunity to get active through our offer of the free 7-day leisure centre pass.

“Our mission to encourage everyone to participate in 30 minutes of moderate physical activity, five times a week, so whether that be through utilising the gym, swim and group fitness classes at our sites, walking or cycling to destinations instead of driving, or both – we’re all for it and delighted to be involved.”

The challenge is delivered by Warwick District Council in partnership with BetterPoints, an award-winning behaviour change technology. It is funded by Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership (CWLEP) and Warwick District Council in association with the Council providing venues for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games Lawn Bowls and Para Bowls and Cycling Road Race events.

Sarah Windrum, Chair of CWLEP, said: “It is fantastic that the wider benefits of this scheme are helping to create a green, sustainable future and boosting the local economy which were among the priorities of CWLEP’s Strategic Reset Framework.

“The Local Growth Fund was established for Local Enterprise Partnerships to invest in projects which help their local area, and this project is benefitting residents of Warwick District by becoming more active and using sustainable transport while at the same time earning high street shopping vouchers.”

The challenge complements the District Council’s aims to encourage active communities, improve air quality, and support town centres and the local economy. Users of the BetterPoints app also benefit from a boost to their health and fitness by monitoring their levels of physical activity through the app.

Local businesses are encouraged to visit the challenge website to find out more about the free-to-join scheme and sign up to support it.
