Warwick District Council is to introduce an annual fee for residents who wish to have their garden waste collected.

Update 1 March 2022: The annual cost of the green bin collection from April 2023 has not yet been confirmed. We have therefore removed the stated £44 annual cost from the news item.

Following approval by full Council on 23 February, from 1 August a subscription of £20 will be required for customers who opt for a fortnightly green bin collection until the end of March 2023. The annual cost from April 2023 will be confirmed later this year.

Councillor Alan Rhead, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Neighbourhood Services commented;

“This was a difficult decision, but as the collection of garden waste is a discretionary service, we would rather give our residents the choice of paying  rather than withdrawing it completely.”

“On the plus side, our new South Warwickshire 123+ system starting from August will see separate kerbside food waste collections every week in addition to the introduction of a co-mingled recycling service. We’ll also be promoting the home composting option available to residents should they want to do this instead, which is a great way of creating a good quality soil conditioner from the cuttings in your garden.”

“Approximately 9% of every household’s total Council Tax bill is allocated to Warwick District Council for the all the services we provide (£176.86 a year for Band D), from this residents pay on average 48p a week for their waste and recycling collections, which we believe offers good value for money.”

The new green bin subscription service will be introduced from 1 August, with permits available to purchase from May. There will be further information available on the Warwick District Council website in due course, along with details of the new 123+ waste collection service.

123+ waste collection service

Both Warwick and Stratford-on-Avon District Councils are committed to improving their services for the residents of South Warwickshire and are implementing a programme of joint working and shared services.

The new waste contract with Biffa across both Council districts will focus on achieving both environmental and financial benefits. The 123+ service will see:

  • weekly food waste collections
  • two weekly recyclable waste collections
  • three weekly non-recyclable waste collections

This will encourage residents to increase their household recycling, reduce non-recyclable waste and reduce the cost of treating and disposing of rubbish. In addition, it will support the ambition of both councils to achieve carbon-neutral status for their districts by 2030.

We will be updating our webpage regularly with the latest information. Alternatively, you get in touch using our 123+ collections enquiry form.
