Latest figures from Sport England have revealed that people living in Warwick District are amongst the best in the country when it comes to taking regular exercise.

The most recent ‘Active Lives’ survey which provides an overview of sport and physical activity levels amongst the over 16s in England, has shown that Warwick District has the highest ‘Active’ population across the sub region at 70.9% which is 9.3% higher than the sub regional average (61.6%) and 10% higher than the national average (60.9%).

Warwick District Council is continuing with its long-term investment in sport and leisure, which over the last five years has seen a multi-million pound rejuvenation of the Council owned leisure centres at Newbold Comyn (Leamington Spa) and St Nicholas Park (Warwick) with work starting this year to build brand new facilities at Abbey Fields and Castle Farm in Kenilworth.

Volunteers at the wellbeing walk

Councillor Liam Bartlett, Portfolio Holder for Culture, Tourism and Leisure commented:

“These statistics are really encouraging and not only reflect the success of our investment in the local leisure centres, but also the plethora of opportunities available across the district to take part in physical activities whatever your age or fitness level. We are so lucky to have a fantastic range of inclusive clubs and groups in our community mainly run by volunteers including three park-runs, football, bowls, netball, cycling, running, dance, rugby, swimming, karate, yoga, hockey, cricket and water-sports.

“Although a vast majority of people in our district are active, it’s also important that we introduce those who aren’t currently participating to the health benefits of taking regular exercise. Losing weight and building fitness levels can greatly reduce risks of illness or hospitalisation from Covid-19 and also some common cancers, blood pressure, heart disease or diabetes. We are therefore delighted to see the resurgence of local well-being walks with several taking place each week across Warwick, Leamington and Kenilworth.

“In addition, the Council wants to ensure that people living in Kenilworth continue to have a good range of fitness provision available to them on their doorsteps while the leisure centres are closed with an extensive list of providers and activities listed on our website.”
