Plans to create a range of cycling trails to meet local demand for safe and secure cycling were approved at a meeting of the Planning Committee on Thursday 20 May 2021.

A masterplan for Newbold Comyn, an outline document that shows the potential for outdoor activities on the site along with an extension to the nature reserve, was approved by the Council’s Executive in November 2020 following an extensive period of consultation.

The first aspect of the masterplan to be brought forward is the planned provision of cycling facilities on a small section of the former golf course, providing local people with a mix of trails that allow them a safe and secure place to develop their cycling skills. The trails will be supported by a cycling hub in the former golf shop which will provide cycle hire facilities, a café, and toilets.

The location and design of the trails will ensure that all users of the space will be able to share it amicably, as access to the area will not be limited to just cyclists. Providing a designated area also ensures that this kind of activity is isolated to a small section of the Comyn, leaving other areas planned for greater nature enhancement for all users to enjoy.

Councillor Alan Rhead, Portfolio Holder for Climate Change, said: “I am pleased to see that planning permission has been granted which is the first step in providing local cycling facilities for the local community.

“Cycling is such an important skill to develop, especially as we move towards more sustainable ways of travelling. Having a local facility where children and families can learn together is a significant step towards a greener and more environmentally conscious district. These cycle trails will be free to use, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to access them.”

The Council will now begin work on the conditions as set out in the planning permission.

Once work is due to commence, the Council will keep residents informed of the progress and any potential temporary disruption whilst the trails are constructed.
