Grade II* listed building in Kenilworth has been restored to its former glory

Abbotsford House Kenilworth frontA Grade II* listed building in Kenilworth has been restored to its former glory thanks to the collaborative efforts of Warwick District Council’s conservation team and developers, Castle Homes of Warwick.

Abbotsford House, one of the first buildings in the country to receive listed status, dates from the late eighteenth century and was used as a school from the 1840’s until 2010. Standing empty for a number of years, the building soon became dilapidated and parts of the structure were close to collapse.

Initial proposals sought to convert the building into apartments, however this scheme was considered contentious as it would have harmed the building’s heritage features.

Castle Homes of Warwick, the developer for Abbotsford House, worked closely with planning officers, Historic England and Warwick District Council’s Principal Conservation Officer to produce a scheme that protected the building’s special significance.

A proposal to convert the building into two residences was agreed, retaining all of the building’s grandeur, including the principal rooms, entrance hall, landings, and staircases.

The project, stretching over approximately five years, has involved specialist craftspeople, council officers, and developers adopting a conservation approach. Historic windows, doors, cornices, fireplaces and external features such as cast iron railings have all been repaired.

Councillor Pat Cain, Chair of Warwick District Council’s Conservation Advisory Forum, said: “Abbotsford House is one of the most important historic buildings in Kenilworth and it’s wonderful that it has been saved for everyone to enjoy.”

Russell Davis from Castle Homes of Warwick, added: “Castle Homes of Warwick are pleased to have worked with Warwick District Council on this project and we will be showing members of the Council’s Conservation Advisory Forum around the building so they can appreciate the result of years of hard work and dedication.”

The Abbotsford House restoration includes the development of new homes at Abbotsford Mews, neighbouring the listed building. Please see www.castlehomesofwarwick.co.uk or call 01926 736978 for further information about the new homes.
