The Poplars are to be felled or cut back on safety grounds, due to their location bordering the popular sports facilities used on a daily basis by both adults and children.

Over the past few months, the trees have been carefully monitored by the District Council’s Green Spaces and County Council’s Forestry teams. It has since become apparent that the disease which affected several trees felled in February 2025 has spread through the root system to many of the remaining trees.

Councillor Will Roberts, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhood commented:

“As custodians of this well used facility our priority is always to ensure the safety of the public. Though it is sad to see the removal of any tree, safety remains our priority.

“The planned relocation of the athletics facility will see the site become part of Elizabeth Park, where replacement trees will be planted.”
