The UK government has announced that a nationwide test of the Emergency Alerts system will take place on Sunday 7 September 2025 3pm.

During the test, compatible 4G and 5G mobile phones and tablets will receive an alert. Devices will emit a loud, siren-like sound, vibrate, and display a message on screen. The government has confirmed that no action will be required from the public.

The Emergency Alerts system is designed to warn people if there is a danger to life nearby, such as during extreme weather or other emergencies. Officials say that regular tests are essential to make sure the system functions as intended and to familiarise the public with how alerts will appear and sound.

This will be the second national test of the service, following a commitment by the government to conduct regular trials. The government stress that the test message will make clear that it is only a drill and that no further steps are required.
