To ask for information under the Freedom of Information Act or Environmental Information Regulations, you must tell us:

  • Your full name and address
  • The information you would like
  • How you like the response sent to you (for example, letter or email)

We will let you know we have got your letter or e-mail in two working days of us having got it, and we should respond to your request in 20 working days.

We will try to give you what you have asked for but there may be times when we can’t give you the information because, we don’t have the information, we are not permitted to under the Freedom of Information Act or if it would take a very long time for staff to collect for you. If we can’t give you all or part of the information you have asked for, we will write to you, saying why.

You are allowed to make a request for Environmental Information verbally, but it is helps us know what you are asking for if you ask for it in writing.

If you are dissatisfied with our response

If you are unhappy with our response, or haven’t received a response after you have contacted us to ask for information under Freedom on Information, then please follow the steps below. To make a general complaint, please complete our complaints form..

  1. First, contact the council officer who is dealing with what you are asking for and see if they can help.
  2. If you are not happy, you can ask us to carry out an internal review of your issue. You should ask for a review within 40 days of getting our final response. To ask for a review, you should write to the address above or e-mail our Data Protection Officer at, and we will carry out our internal review procedure. What will happen will be;
    • Your issue will be dealt with on behalf of the Democratic Services Manager & Deputy Monitoring Officer by a senior officer with appropriate knowledge and experience. Normally, this will be a member of the Legal Services team.
    • The internal review procedure is a single stage review process which will usually take no more than 20 working days from when you ask us to do an internal review.
    • Sometimes, the review may take longer than 20 days, like when there is a lot for us to consider, but it should take no longer than 40 working days from when you ask us to do an internal review.
  3. If you are not happy with the outcome of the internal review, you may also appeal to the Information Commissioner if you feel we have not done what we must do by law. You can find out more information on the Information Commissioner’s website.
