Record details

Common tree name
Western Red Cedar
Species Name
Thuja plicata
Description
This tree has been a favourite for climbing on by generations of Leamington children. If you pick up a leaf from the ground and crush it between your fingers, it will smell of pineapple. The leaf looks as if it is a plait, hence the plicata part of its botanical name.

It comes from NW America, and as the wood is rot resistant, it was used by the indigenous people for canoes, totem poles and tools. These trees can live for over 1000 years. If you visit the Welsh Assembly building in Cardiff do admire the huge Canadian Western Red Cedar cowl at the heart of the building.
Country of origin
Northwest-Pacific Coast, North America
