Description
The name comes from the sweet resinous sap which was once used as chewing gum in the southern United States. The fruit is a prickly small ball packed with seeds, and this tree bears plenty in the autumn, so you may find some on the ground. There are several larger trees in Jephson Gardens, the largest in Warwickshire being along the path from the Aviary towards Willes Road. It is also being planted as a street tree in Leamington. The tree is an old species known from fossil records and is widespread around warmer regions of the world.
