Record details

Common tree name
Holm Oak
Species Name
Quercus Ilex
Description
This is one of a number of Holm Oaks in Jephson Gardens but is very special. It is the last of the oaks planted in the Ceremony of Oaks in 1848. Each oak was planted to commemorate a local or national person, it is not known who this one commemorates. You may be surprised to find an evergreen oak, but many oaks around the world are evergreen. The much younger holm oak, next to this one but nearer the main gate usually has acorns in the autumn. That shows it is an oak.
Country of origin
Eastern Mediterranean
