Common tree name
Deodar Cedar
Species Name
Cedrus deodara
Description
There are lots of cedars in the gardens, but a Deodar Cedar is identified by its drooping branch tips. It was possibly planted here by Dr Hitchman who loved conifers, and had an interest in the gardens in the late 1830s, early 1840s. These tall trees are natives of the Himalayas and the national tree of Pakistan. The name is derived from the Sanskrit word devadāru which means “wood of the gods”. The wood was used to build temples and the famous houseboats of Srinagar, Kashmir.
Country of origin
Himalayas, South-Central Asia
