Black Mulberry
Species Name
Morus nigra
Description
This is one of the last trees in the gardens to come into leaf, and in late summer has dark black loganberry-looking fruit, mulberries. Though delicious, beware, the pigment that makes Mulberries so colourful will also stain your hands and clothing. James I promoted the import of black mulberry trees in the mistaken belief that they would support silkworms. He planted 10,000 where Buckingham Palace now stands – one still survives in the gardens there.
Country of origin
Caspian coast, Southwest Asia
