Plans for the new swimming facility include a second indoor pool with an adjoining sun terrace, as well as a new conservatory café area directly accessible by park users.

The multi-million-pound development for Abbey Fields is scheduled to commence in early March 2024. This development will have an extensive range of benefits for the whole community and will allow a wider range of activities.

The plans include:

  • Additional family indoor pool, which opens up to sun terrace
  • A moveable floor in the family pool to alter the water depth and direct access via a hoist from a fully accessible changing room
  • Direct pool access via a hoist from a ‘Changing Place’ facility for the disabled, the first of its kind in the District.
Attractive conservatory style café for park and pool visitors
  • New, larger changing rooms with family friendly facilities
  • New, bright and fresh entrance area and reception with views over the park

Given the climate emergency declared by Warwick District Council in June 2019, the reduction of carbon emissions and use of sustainable materials has been a key driver in these projects.

Phase one of the demolition has been completed at Abbey Fields, and some archaeological finds are now being investigated. Visit the archaeological finds page for a 3D model, images and further details.

The construction of the new Abbey Fields Swimming Pool will be undertaken by Kier Construction and is scheduled to commence in mid to late March 2024.

Phase one of the demolition of the old Abbey Fields swimming pool building was completed in summer 2023. This stage revealed extensive archaeological finds on site. This led to the project being halted whilst the Council’s project team analysed the options available to allow them to continue with the build whilst protecting the medieval remains and the implications this would have on the timeline and investment needed. In February 2024, in agreement with the Council’s Cabinet and Group Leaders from all political parties, a new contract was negotiated and signed with the main contractor, Kier, allowing the work to recommence, with an estimated completion in summer 2026.

What happens next?

Construction on the new facility will commence in March 2024.
