What is the City Nature Challenge?

The City Nature Challenge is a global event where people around the world work together to record as much wildlife as possible over one weekend. Cities and regions take part in a friendly competition to see who can document the most species and observations.

Warwickshire, Coventry and Solihull will be taking part, and we’d love residents to help showcase the amazing wildlife right here on our doorstep. From garden flowers and insects to birds, fungi and mammals, every observation helps build a picture of local biodiversity.

When is it?

The challenge takes place between 24 and 27 April 2026. During these four days, residents are encouraged to get outside and record any wildlife they spot.

There will also be a range of guided walks and family-friendly activities across the area during the weekend. Event details will be added to this page once they are confirmed.

How to get involved

Taking part is simple and open to everyone.

  1. Download the free iNaturalist app on your phone.
  2. Take photos of wild plants, animals or fungi you find.
  3. Upload your observations to the app.

You don’t need to be an expert – the app and its community will help identify what you’ve found. Whether you record one species or one hundred, every observation counts.

Why it matters

All sightings recorded during the challenge will contribute to the Warwickshire Biological Records Centre, which manages wildlife data for the area.

This information helps:

  • support conservation projects
  • inform planning decisions
  • protect important habitats and species
  • improve our understanding of local wildlife

By taking part, you’ll be helping to build a clearer picture of nature across our region.
