Susannah Heffernan - TS Eliot and World War One: A New Take on the Drowned Phoenician Sailor

Susannah Heffernan

Date: 2nd October 2018

Location: Lord Leycester Hospital, High Street, Warwick, CV34 4BH

Time: 11:00

The Waste Land TS Eliot is widely seen as Eliot’s response to the devastations of the First World War.

Susannah Heffernan, a writer of literary speculative fiction, takes inspiration from his characters, Madame Sosostris and the Phoenician Sailor, and tells the little known history of American soldiers in Europe during the Great War.

Her stories pose questions of identity, alienation and the telling of unheard histories. Susannah will read from her novel, a new workin-progress, and there will be a Q&A session chaired by Professor Mike Tooby.

Inspired by Journeys with “The Waste Land”, an exhibition at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, Coventry, 15 September – 18 November 2018.
