Two contrasting works, premiered in Paris, the first with ravishingly beautiful music from Louis XIV’s time, followed by a romp around a market that involves an ostentatious drum major and three comely market vendors with surprisingly deep voices.  Written in 1858, the same year as Offenbach’s most popular operetta Orpheus in the Underworld which unveiled the Can Can!
