Feasibility study for bridge over River Avon

Warwick District Council’s Executive Committee has approved a proposal to investigate the feasibility of a new bridge over the River Avon. The proposal suggests joining St Nicholas Park to Myton Fields by a pedestrian and cycle bridge whilst at the same time improving parking facilities at Myton Fields. The decision represents the first step in a process which will involve consulting with residents, visitors and other interested groups as well as liaising with local businesses.

A bridge would provide a safe access route into the town centre for pedestrians and cyclists, many of them from the local schools nearby, as well as creating an exciting new landmark for the town.

A bridge of exemplary design would be necessary and it is hoped that world class design talent will tender for the project. The feasibility study will also investigate car parking options at Myton Fields to provide a year round car park with improved connectivity to the town centre. Long term aspirations include the improvement of air quality in Warwick by encouraging more people to walk or cycle instead of driving into the town centre.

Councillor Stephen Cross, Portfolio Holder for Development said, "If the bridge proposal were to progress it would represent a huge investment in Warwick Town Centre and we will be looking for the feasibility study to demonstrate that the new bridge will bring the positive improvements to the town centre for businesses and residents that we currently envisage."

Councillor Dave Shilton, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhood said, "Part of this project will be to investigate improving Myton Fields car park. This is currently used on a seasonal basis, but it is expected that a new bridge will generate more visitors who want to start their visit to Warwick at this point throughout the whole year. It will also allow for the increase in visitors we are anticipating, following the improvements to St Nicholas Park Leisure Centre. Even if the bridge idea doesn’t proceed, there’s still a very strong case for improving the car parking."

Council officers will now begin the feasibility work with relevant stakeholders and parties to establish the cost and viability of the work.
