Political campaigning - use of personal data

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has published its updated political campaigning guidance.

This guidance provides clarity and practical advice to help those processing personal data in political campaigning to comply with:

  • UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR)
  • Data Protection Act 2018 (DPA) and the Privacy
  • Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations (PECR)

The guidance does not introduce any new obligations or responsibilities for campaigners above existing data protection and electronic marketing laws.

Candidate nomination packs

To be a candidate your completed nomination paper and consent to nomination are to be delivered to the below address by no later than 4pm on Thursday 8 April 2021:

Completed nominations can only be accepted in person between the hours of 10am and 4pm from Monday 22 March to Thursday 8 April 2020 (week days) and must not be returned by post.

Warwick District Council offices are currently closed to the public, so please book an appointment with the Electoral Services Team on 01926 456105 to arrange to personally hand your nomination in.

This year nominations cannot be checked at time of submission and you are advised to contact the Electoral Services team in advance to arrange for an informal check of your nomination via email.

Requests for the register of electors have to be made by the candidate and there is a request form in the candidate nomination information pack.

The Electoral Commission and National Police Chief's Council have recently also published guidance regarding the safety of election candidates.

An online briefing held via Microsoft Teams for validly nominated candidates and their election agents (if appointed) will take place on Monday 12 April 2021 at 3.30pm via Microsoft Teams. An invite will be sent to election agents and candidates who are their own agents. The briefing will cover:

  • electoral integrity
  • polling day
  • postal voting
  • verification and count arrangements
  • post-election activities
