If you are thinking of extending or altering your home or building a new home, please check your proposals comply with our Residential Design Guide (3MB, PDF). The guide sets out what the Council expect in terms of good design and includes advice on layout, density, character, local architectural styles, materials, access and parking, landscaping and open space.

More detailed guidance is also available on ensuring the design of your development does not impact on neighbouring properties; namely 45 Degree Guideline (170kb, PDF) and the Distance Separation Guidance (106kb, PDF).

The guides have been prepared following public consultation with design professionals, amenity societies, and local people who wish to see good design in the district. The Council has adopted them as Supplementary Planning Guidance and it expects all planning applications for residential development to conform with the guidance given.
