Council tax benefit could help pay towards some or all of your council tax bill if you are on a low income, even if you own your own home.
We will work out if you qualify for help, taking account of your individual circumstances. This will include your age and whether you live alone. If you or your partner have capital, savings and investments worth more than £16,000 then you are not entitled to receive benefits unless you are in receipt of Pension Guarantee Credit.
You should apply straight away, as council tax benefit is available now.
If you claim Pension Credit, Income Support or Jobseeker's Allowance you will also get a form to claim council tax benefit with your application. Some discounts and exemptions include
- Single Person Discount – 25% off your council tax bill for dwellings with one occupier.
- Disabled Relief – A one band reduction, if you, or someone who lives with you (an adult or child), uses a wheelchair indoors, or has an additional bathroom, kitchen or other room to meet special needs arising from a disability.
- Second adult rebate – up to 25% reduction for people who cannot get help for themselves with their council tax but have people living with them that are on low incomes.
- Severe mental impairment – 100% exemption for dwellings solely occupied by persons who are severely mentally impaired.
- Student exemption – if there are full time students in the property you may be able to get an exemption or a discount on the council tax.
- Other help – A dwelling left unoccupied by a person who has moved to permanently receive personal care, whether in a hospital, nursing home or residential care home.
