House to house collections

Licence summary

House to house collections are granted by this council under the House to House Collections Act 1939.

A licence is required by any charity or similar organisation which wishes to collect money or other articles by going from house to house. This also applies if the collection is carried out by visiting public houses.

Licences can be issued for any period up to twelve months. A return is required showing the amount collected and how it was spent within one month of the licence expiring.

Eligibility

Each collector must be supplied with a badge of authority. These badges can be obtained from Her Majesty's Stationery Office by the licence holder after the licence has been granted.

National organisations which regularly collect in the area of a number of councils can apply to the Home Officer for an Order exempting them from the need to obtain a licence from each council. Organisations with Orders of Exemption do not have to apply for a licence but they must inform the council when they intend to carry out a collection in the district.
