Data Protection Act 1998
The aims of the previous Data Protection Act 1984 are as follows, and these principles still apply under the 1998 Act:
- To protect the rights of individuals who have information held on them on computers and similar automatic processing equipment;
- To enable individuals to seek compensation through the courts for damage and associated distress caused by the loss, destruction or unauthorised disclosure of data, or by inaccurate data;
- To enable individuals to rectify or erase inaccurate data held about them, on computers and similar automatic processing equipment; and
- To ensure that data users (e.g. this Council) or computer bureaux are open about their use of personal data and maintain good practice in relation to the data they hold.
