Octavia Hill (1838-1912) was a woman ahead of her time. An artist and a radical, she was a pioneer of affordable housing and can be seen as the founder of modern social work.
In 1885, along with Robert Hunter and Hardwicke Rawnsley, she worked to raise public awareness of the railway developments threatening the Lake District.
This collaboration led to the foundation of The National Trust for the Preservation of Historic Buildings and Natural Beauty, to hold land and buildings in perpetuity “for ever, for everyone”.
