Smoking related litter

On the 1st July 2007 the Government introduced legislation making it illegal for people to smoke in the majority of enclosed public spaces. This smoke-free legislation includes pubs, bars, cafes and offices.

With smokers being moved outside and onto the streets we are working hard to ensure smoking litter does not become a problem around the district.

We recommend that businesses make themselves aware of their responsibility to do all they can to keep the public area litter free. 

Smoking, litter and the law

Businesses have a legal responsibility to help clean up excessive street litter outside of their premises. Cigarette butts are litter and the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and Clean Neighbourhoods Act 2005 gives local councils powers to enforce action by businesses through Fixed Penalty Notices, Litter Clearing Notices and Street Litter Control Notices.

Education opportunities

We will provide advice and assistance to any business or premises wishing to manage the smoking litter being generated by their staff and/or customers. We can provide advice and guidance on cleaning schedules, waste disposal and how best to reach your target audience.

Advice on ashtrays

Many pubs and bars in the district are already providing ashtrays for their customers at the front and rear of their premises.

As a business you could also provide staff with portable ashtrays. You can view and order products at the following sites:
