Park and Charge
Plans are under way to provide battery charging points for electric vehicles in two of Warwick District Council’s multi-storey car parks.
The double charging points will be fully operational by April 2010 in St Peter’s and Covent Garden car parks. The charging points are being supplied by Infracharge who are emerging leaders in the supply of this type of equipment. Initial installation will commence in February with testing taking place in March.
(CaBLED) project in partnership with Warwick District Council
Warwick District Council will be the first local authority in Warwickshire to provide charging points and is aimed at supporting the Coventry and Birmingham Low Emissions Demonstration (CaBLED) project launched in the West Midlands in December 2009.
The CaBLED study is aimed at understanding how users of electric vehicles use their vehicle. "Range anxiety" is the major factor in determining where users of electric vehicles are willing to travel.
By providing these charging points the council are making Leamington a suitable destination for the owners of electric vehicles including those operating as part of the CaBLED study. Hopefully it will also encourage those who may work in the town and are considering purchasing one to do so.
Users of electric powered vehicles will be able to charge their vehicles from one of four dedicated charging points (two in each car park). The cost of charging the vehicle will be free although the user will have to pay the normal parking charge associated with the car park.
Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhood Services, Cllr David Shilton, said:
"The use of electric vehicles is expected to increase significantly over the next few years and many of these vehicles are expected to be produced from parts manufactured in the Midlands. Warwick District Council is keen to assist the development of electric vehicles by supplying charging points in our car parks. By making charging points available we are making Warwick District a suitable “destination” for users of electric vehicles and at the same time helping to make the district a cleaner place."
