Recycling and refuse information for students

Wheeled bins and rubbish

Your responsibilities

Last year Warwick District Council issued a number of enforcement notices to students after they failed to comply with the waste and recycling policy operated within the Warwick District.
To avoid this action and a possible conviction or fines of up to £1000, please follow these simple instructions;

  • Most properties have a grey bin for rubbish – only use this for non-recyclable waste.
  • If your property has a green bin this is only for garden and food waste*
  • Ensure all waste is contained within the bins (with the lids shut). If you are struggling please contact us as soon as possible.
  • Separate your recycling and put in the red boxes* and red/white bags* Place your containers at the edge of your property by 7am (or the night before) and replace them back on your property once empty.
  • If your property does not have a grey bin; please contact us.

* If your green bin/red boxes are used for rubbish we may remove and recharge your landlord for replacement(s)

As residents of Warwick District, however temporary, you still have a responsibility for your own waste. Your landlord may charge you for removal of excess waste that builds up or is left behind when you leave. If you find you are struggling to contain your waste and it is building up as loose bags outside the bin, contact us sooner rather than later, we may be able to help by providing advice or depending on circumstances a larger/extra bin.

If you have access to a car you can take rubbish, recycling and bulky items like furniture and unwanted electricals to your nearest Household Waste and Recycling Centre at:

If you don’t have a car and have large bulky items, such as furniture, that need removing WDC offer a bulky collection service (for a charge) where up to 5 items can be removed at a time.  Call us on 01926 412464 to book a collection.

Leaving student accommodation

The council will be inspecting your property at the end of term and any excess waste/ mess left behind will be reported to your landlord.

Your landlord will be recharged by the Council for any extra rubbish left behind that we have to remove. This is likely to affect your deposit.

We appreciate that many of you are moving on and clearing out your student accommodation and may be left with extra refuse that won't fit into your grey bin/ grey sacks and larger bulky items like small electricals and other items.

Please take reusable household items that you need to get rid of to either

Don't be tempted to leave rubbish and unwanted items outside your property

If you're not sure what to do with items you're leaving behind, don't dump them outside your property. We could issue you with a Section 46 Notice under the Environment Protection Act which could lead to a conviction with fines up to £1000. Don't run the risk of ending up with a criminal record.

If you have any queries don't leave it until the last minute - call the Recycling Team on 01926 456349 or email us at waste.eductaion@warwickdc.gov.uk and we'll give you helpful advice.
