Battery recycling

Battery recycling bags

Warwick District Council has launched a brand new bag to make battery recycling easier.

The battery bags, which are made from recycled plastic, were launched as part of national Recycle Week.

Every year, 600 million household batteries are sent to landfill in the UK – that’s the equivalent of 110 jumbo jets.

Simply collect up your used or unwanted household batteries in the new bag and then once full, seal it up and put them in your red box for recycling. It is not essential to use the new bag, you can continue to use your own plastic bag if preferred. However, research shows that almost 9 out of 10 people would recycle batteries if they had a special storage container so we hope that the new bags will make battery recycling easier and encourage people to recycle more.

All household batteries (single use and rechargeable) can be recycled through the red box scheme, here are just some examples where you might find batteries:

  • Mobile phones
  • Children's toys
  • Laptop computers
  • Games consoles i.e. Wii, Playstation, etc.
  • TV remote controls
  • Cordless phones
  • Infrared keyboard and mouse
  • Clocks and watches
  • Digital cameras
  • Answer phones
  • Torches
  • Calculators
  • Smoke detectors
  • Personal attack alarms
  • Cordless drills
  • Hearing aids
  • Doorbells
  • and lots more...

The new battery bags can be picked up from Warwickshire Direct offices, the main Council offices in Leamington Spa, recycling crews or any of the Council’s road shows held regularly across the district.

Batteries can also be recycled at the main Household Waste Recycling Centres at Princes Drive in Leamington Spa or Cherry Orchard in Kenilworth.
