Major incidents
Any event or circumstance (happening with or without warning) that causes or threatens death or injury, disruption to the community or damage to property or to the environment on such a scale that the effects cannot be dealt with by the emergency services, local authorities and other organisations as part of their normal day-to-day activities.
The response to major incidents is normally co-ordinated by the Police, although individual agencies are responsible for their own operations. In Warwick District, these operate at different levels from county-wide strategic co-ordination down to tactical and operational command. The District Council may also set up special contract arrangements such as telephone helplines. These will be widely publicised through local press, radio and TV at the time.
Intermediate incidents
Other incidents of a localised nature which are normally dealt with by direct liaison between the appropriate services - road accidents, spillages, house fires causing temporary homelessness, etc.
Chemical Pollution
If you have concerns about chemical pollution of a river or major water supply, for example oil, milk or other substances, you should inform the Environment Agency on 0800 807 060. If the pollution is on land, then please contact our Environmental Health Department on 01926 450 000 and request extension 6722.
