The planning process can be very daunting to those not directly involved. The Government recognises this and in 2004 introduced major changes to the planning system through the Planning & Compulsory Purchase Act. A key aim of the new planning system is to involve communities in the planning process, both in terms of consulting on planning applications and in plan-making.
All Council’s are therefore required to produce a Statement of Community Involvement (SCI). The role of the SCI is to set out the standards to be achieved by the Council in involving the community in the preparation, alteration and review of its local development documents and in considering planning applications. The SCI should be a clear public statement enabling the community to know how and when they will be involved in the preparation of local development documents and how they will be consulted on planning applications.
The Council adopted its Statement of Community Involvement on 23rd July 2007. You can view the key documents below:-
Preparing the Statement of Community Involvement
In November 2006, the Council prepared a Draft Statement of Community Involvement (192kb, PDF). This was available for public consultation until 22nd December 2006.
The Council then considered the outcome of this consultation and approved a revised version of the SCI which was submitted to the Secretary of State. This was the Submission Statement of Community Involvement (457 KB). This document was made available for public comment between 10th April and 21st May 2007.

Following submission of the representations received and the Council's responses to the Planning Inspectorate, the Council received the Inspector's binding report in June 2007. The Inspector accepted the changes that the Council had suggested and added further information to ensure the overall soundness of the final document. The final SCI document which was adopted by the Council (see above) reflects all of the changes agreed by the Inspector.
