Warwick District has a rich legacy of historic buildings and these are an important part of our national and local heritage. So that these buildings can be preserved, a system exists for their protection.
What is a Listed Building?
A building of "special architectural or historic interest" and has been placed on a list drawn up by English Heritage and approved by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport.
Listed status can also be applied to other structures if they are of special architectural merit or historical importance, such as milestones, gates, fences or telephone boxes.
If listed, extra restrictions exist to protect the character and setting of that building. If you wish to make any changes to a listed building, you should check first with the Council what restrictions may be in place. The Council has published an advice leaflet Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas (1.5MB,PDF)for owners of listed properties, and other properties within conservation areas.
See also Conservation information and advice.
Further details on listed buildings can also be found on the English Heritage website.
