An introduction to the Building Regulations
The Building Regulations are made under powers provided in the Building Act 1984. They apply to the majority of building projects. Their aim is to ensure the health, safety and welfare of people in and around buildings. They also provide standards for energy conservation and access and facilities for disabled people.
Anyone wishing to carry out work which is covered by the Building Regulations must ensure it complies with the regulations and submit a valid application or initial notice prior to commencing the work.

Search applications and book inspections
You can use our web register to search for building regulations applications or book inspections. The web register allows you to check the progress of your application and can be used to discover what building work is being carried out anywhere in the district. This service now replaces the paper format commencement list and completion list.
Apply for building regulations
We are currently revising our online fee calculator, so please contact us if you require assistance with fees. To make an application you may download our new Building regulations application form (188kb, PDF) or make an online application using our new submit-a-plan service, or alternatively use our original electronic submission system. Payments can be made online or by post.
There is now a schedule of supplementary charges (126kb, PDF) which are being applied where relevant. We have now scanned and archived all old applications up to and including 2006. As of 1st January 2011 the reactivation of a dormant file will incur a charge.
