    Our pools

Warwick District Council owns and operates three modern indoor swimming pools plus an outdoor pool (at Abbey Fields Swimming Pool, Kenilworth - open June - September each year). These pools are open for public swimming at various times during the week; they are also very well used by local schools and clubs.

Swimming facilities at Newbold Comyn Leisure Centre include a leisure pool with flume, beach area and spa pool in addition to the standard 25m pool.

The pool at St Nicholas Park Leisure Centre is a 25 x 13m standard pool with small children's pool.

All pools are supervised by qualified and well trained lifeguards to ensure that your visit is a safe and enjoyable one.

    Junior Swimming Admission Policy

In line with national guidelines and recommendations from ROSPA and ISRM, Warwick District Council pools operate the following policy in order to minimise risks to children in swimming pools. The policy applies to public swimming, pool parties and groups using the pool during public swimming sessions.

    • Children under the age of 4 must be accompanied by a responsible person (aged 16 or over) on a one to one basis
    • Children aged 4  - 7 years must be accompanied by a responsible person (aged 16 or over) on a maximum ratio of one adult to two children
    • Children aged 8 and over may use the pools unaccompanied at the discretion of their parent/guardian/carer and the pool supervisor

To assist parents with young children there are a number of special sessions included in the pool programmes where there is a higher ratio of lifeguards on duty and the policy is relaxed to allow an adult (aged 16 or over) to supervise up to two children (under 8 years) irrespective of their age.

Following revised guidance from ISRM we have added "non swimmers areas" at Abbey Fields swimming Pool and St Nicholas Park Leisure Centre. These will take effect from April 2006 and will allow adults to bring the following ratios:

    •  up to 3 children aged 4 -7yrs who are either swimmers, or are non swimmers wearing armbands
    •  up to 2 children aged under 4yrs who are either swimmers, or non swimmers wearing armbands.

These non swimmers areas have been identified following detailed risk assessments of each pool and will apply to:

Abbey Fields Indoor pool - Saturdays 2 - 4pm (shallow end only)

St Nicholas Park Leisure Centre - "Splash pool" during all public swimming session except Splosh sessions

    Swimming tests

We also offer the option for children aged over 4 years to be tested against the ASA Swimming Standard which if they are successful in achieving this standard means that they do not require direct adult supervision - therefore allowing an adult to bring a further 2 children aged 4 - 7 yrs as well as the "competent" swimmer. It would also allow an adult to bring a 3 year old and a 6 year old providing the 6 year old held the ASA Swimming Standard.

The ASA standard requires the child to successfully complete the following to the satisfaction of the member of staff assessing for the award:

    • Jump from the side into water of 1.5m or more so that the head fully submerges; or where there is only shallow water to hold a submerged mushroom float for 10 seconds
    • Tread water for 1 minute
    • Swim 50 meters in under 2 minutes

If you wish a child to be tested for the above award please contact the pool of your choice in advance to arrange a suitable time for the test to take place.
