In the summer this year, London will host the Olympic Games, having previously hosted the games in 1908 and 1948. As one of the greatest sporting events, it is expected that one billion people worldwide will be watching the opening and closing ceremonies.

What is the Torch Relay? The Torch itself and the Torch Relay have always been important elements in the Olympic Games of Ancient Greece. A very precise ritual for the lighting of the flame is followed at every Games.
The Countdown to the Torch Relay
- 10th May:- The Torch will be lit from the sun's rays at the Temple of Hera in Olympia in a traditional ceremony with a short relay around Greece.
- 17th May:- The Torch will be handed over to the new host city, London, in the Panathenaiko stadium in Athens.
- 18th May:- The flame is the delivered to England, landing at Culdrose where it will be transferred from one torchbearer to another spreading the message of peace, unity and friendship. 8,000 inspirational people will carry the Olympic Flame during its journey across the UK. - 1st July:- The eyes of the world will be on Warwick District, as the Torch Relay arrives and it is our moment to shine.
- 27th July:- The Torch Relay ends when the last Torchbearer lights the cauldron at the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony in the Olympic Stadium, marking the start of the Games. It is extinguished on the final day of the Games, at the Closing Ceremony.
Community events
Are you a member of a club or group, or are you thinking about organising a street party? Residents can sign up at London 2012 to receive guides on making lining the streets for the Olympic Torch Relay great fun - this will include, how to make bunting, fancy dress ideas, posters and invites. For the people that are arranging larger get-togethers, they will also have the opportunity to upload their celebrations to the London 2012 events database to promote their celebrations and get everyone excited.
Warwick Lions Club to hold Olympic themed carnival
On Saturday 30th June 2012 Warwick Lions club will be running team games of 'Olympic Torch' relays as part of their Olympic themed events in the carnival arena for Under 12s. The carnival starts at 12midday with a procession from Hampton Road, and through Warwick Town Centre to St Nicholas Park. Community Games
Community Games is a programme which is inspired by London 2012 to bring people of all backgrounds together from villages, towns and cities to take and play in their own Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The focus of the Community Games is completely up to the community to decide. Some may include competitive elements, whereas others may concentrate on offering new challenges. Whatever the focus, the event should provide an opportunity for everyone in your community to participate and get involved.

Open Weekend 2011
Along with partners we organised a variety of activities throughout the district over the weekend of 23/24 July 2011 to mark the 1 year countdown to the Olympics. 900 people took part. A health walk & parent and baby fitness session was organised by Brunswick Healthy Living Centre, tennis coaching at Victoria Park, kayak taster sessions at Leam Boat Centre, family fun day at Castle Farm Recreation Centre Kenilworth and Storytelling at The Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum were just a few of the activities on offer.
The highlight of the weekend was 450 visitors to the Family Fun Day which included bouncy castle, face painting and an opportunity for young people to try a variety of sports. In total around 900 people took part in the weekend events.
Central Warwickshire School Sport celebrates 500 days to go!
Children from schools across Central Warwickshire came together to celebrate just 500 days to go until the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The year 3 and 4 children from Milverton Primary School, St Augustine's Primary School, St Nicholas Primary School, St Peter's Primary School, Sydenham Primary School, Park Hill Junior School and Clinton Primary School all had the opportunity to take part in a range of activities each linking to one of the values of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Funding secured for local 2012 Projects
Warwick District Council has agreed to support the forthcoming London Olympics with £10,200 for local projects. The money will be used over the next 2 years to deliver a number of the projects that have been detailed in the "Warwick District 2012 Action Plan". Projects that will benefit from the funding include:
- Leamington Latin Festival - Additional Dance Classes
- 2012 Get Active Brochure
- Tennis in the Parks
- Storytelling Events at The Royal Pump Rooms
- Summer Games at St Nicholas Park Leisure Centre in 2011 and 2012
- Taster Archery Sessions
- Edmondscote Olympic Athletics Event
- Canoeing Taster Sessions
- Motionhouse Dance Project
Warwickshire College is committed to Olympic values
Warwickshire College has been recognised for its commitment to the Olympic and Paralympic values by the Get Set network, the Games' official education programme. The college was awarded 'School of the Month' for its creative cultural mural, designed and painted by students at the Leamington centre.
Warwickshire College is the first FE college in the country to receive this accolade, awarded because of the creative, innovative methods the college is using to promote the Olympic and Paralympic values of respect, friendship, equality, excellence, inspiration, courage and determination. Schools involved in World Record Dance Attempt!
On Wednesday 19th January 2011 over 1,000 children and staff from schools in Central Warwickshire put on their dancing shoes to celebrate just 555 days until the London 2012 Olympic Games! The local youngsters took part in a synchronised dance routine at precisely 11.40am or '20 to 12'.

Chair of West Midlands Leadership Group for 2012 Games supports Warwick District
Former world record holder for 5000 metres Mr David Moorcroft OBE was the MC and special guest at the Warwick District Sports Awards on Friday 19th November 2010. The former Olympian spoke to the audience about 2012 and the role we can all play in increasing participation in sport and cultural activities.
Warwick District Sports Awards 2010
Warwick District Council has started to deliver on 2012 related activities. Following a series of Open Weekend events in July 2010 the District Sports Awards were held on 19th November 2010 at Leamington Town Hall. These awards provided the opportunity to raise the profile of sport at all levels and celebrate local sporting achievements. The winners on the evening were:

- Club Volunteer/Unsung Hero - Angie Eadon (Leamington & County Golf Club)

Sub Regional Venue to host football competitions
Coventry's Ricoh Arena has been chosen as one of the football venues for the London 2012 Olympic Games. This will be a great opportunity for local residents to watch Olympic competitions, with Coventry being on our doorstep. Warwick University has also been confirmed as a football training venue for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games.
Chairman of Warwick District Council launches the countdown to 2012
Warwick District Council Chairman Councillor Bertie Mackay launched the countdown to 2012 by giving a speech to an audience of over 100 participants at the 2010 Summer Games at St Nicholas Park Leisure Centre on Tuesday 24th August 2010. Following the speech awards were presented to various young people for their involvement during the day in a variety of sports activities.
Warwick District Council launch new logo in build up to 2012
Warwick District Council Sports Development Team have been working with the Coventry & Warwickshire 2012 Partnership to agree a local logo that will be used to publicise 2012 activities in Warwick District. Watch out for the logo on various publications and posters promoting 2012 activity.
LONDON 2012 OPEN WEEKEND (23-25 JULY 2010) – CELEBRATING THE 2 YEAR COUNTDOWN TO LONDON 2012
Warwick District Council celebrated the 2 year countdown to the games by organising a variety of activities in the district as follows:
- Tennis competitions and social play at Victoria Park Leamington Spa organised by the resident club VP Tennis on Sunday 25th July. Around 20 participants took part throughout the day with the club providing further information about opportunities to continue playing the sport.
- A range of activities were available at St Nicholas Park Leisure Centre, Warwick over the 3 day including; tennis, fitness testing, five a side, free swimming, basketball hoop challenge, table tennis, bouncy castle, face painting, badminton. Around 70 participants enjoyed the various activities on offer.
- Every picture tells a story at Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum on Sat 24th July.
The weekend provide the opportunity to raise the awareness of 2012 and a chance for residents to try a range of free and subsidised activities.
Olympic Champion Clancy Joins the action at Warwick Cycle Racing Day!
World and Olympic Champion wins Warwick Cycle Races
World and Olympic Champion Ed Clancy MBE was first across the finish line in front of Shire Hall on Sunday as he won the 2010 Warwick Cycle Races.
Clancy won an exciting sprint finish against Jeroen Janssen in second and James Moss in third in the climax to the day’s racing organised by Warwickshire County Council and British Cycling. The trio were presented with their prizes from the Mayor of Warwick, Cllr Michael Kinson.
The event included races for youth categories from under-16s to under-8s, a category three race for club riders and a race for emergency services personnel. There was also a 10k unicycle race and lots of family fun including face-painting, juggling and music from steel band Pandemonium. Ed Clancy can now add the Warwick Cycle Races crown to his collection of medals. In August 2008, Clancy was a member of the Olympic team pursuit squad which broke the world record in the heats to beat Russia for the ride-off for silver and gold. On the way to winning gold the following day the British team broke their own world record when beating Denmark by 6.7 seconds. Clancy also won gold medals in the team and individual pursuits at the World Championships in Manchester.
London 2012 Flag Raising
Flag raising events were held in the District to signify the Olympic handover, they were held at Racing Club Warwick and Victoria Park, Leamington Spa in August 2008.
