Introduction
The long awaited facelift of Christchurch Gardens has received the green light with approval of the Executive Committee of the District Council for a programme of works that will see over £53,000 invested in the next year. This represents the culmination of 2 years collaboration between the District and Town Councils with both authorities making a significant financial contribution.
There may be some disruption in the Gardens whilst the work is carried out, particularly path temporary path closures. Please bear with us-the end results will be a much improved area.
The project programme
The Project grew from concerns about the general appearance of the Gardens as a focal point when entering the Town from North of Parade. Following our consultation with various stakeholders, local residents and users of the Gardens, including a survey during the summer of 2010, various proposals were submitted. These have now been analysed and developed into the following priorities:-
- Limited removal of dead, damaged or diseased trees and the planting of 7 new trees to offset those removed
- Implementing new planting with low growing plants to secure open views across the Gardens and add colour and interest
- Retention of existing pathways and the remodelling of others to reflect current desire lines whilst respecting the original character of the Gardens
- Improvements to the Tennis Courts to include repairs to fencing and a new gate to minimise future repair/maintenance costs
The introduction of sustainable planting to the East and West shrub borders began with the removal of the existing planting in February 2011. Replanting will be carried out in Autumn 2011 to allow the area to lie fallow and encourage new growth.
