Warwick District Council, working together with Warwickshire County Council, is in the process of applying to the Heritage Lottery Fund and Big Lottery for money to improve St. Nicholas Park in Warwick.
The project
The bid for funds aims to secure over £2 million to improve St. Nicholas Park and St. John’s House Museum Gardens. The application is to be submitted by the end of March 2008 in order to allow time to collate a strong bid and strong supporting evidence.
Ideas for improvements range from a full time park ranger to improved footways, access for people with disabilities, enhanced planting and refurbishment of existing buildings. The original consultation for the proposals took place in February of this year. The consultation highlighted areas in which the public particularly want to see change or improvement and it is these ideas that will form basis for the decisions about the content of the bid. 20,000 tons of contaminated waste has been removed from the playing field site, which has been re-levelled and drained and 30,000 tons of clean top soil has been brought in, cultivated and seeded.
Work started in early September 07 to complete the outstanding works to the playing fields. Laser Civil Engineering, the main contractors will rectify four areas that have been holding water. They will also remove a small amount of glass exposed when the fencing around their compound was removed. They will also lower a number of manhole covers across the site.
Specialised contractors are returning to bring the grass area back into shape. The site will be over seeded, it will be fed, with an application of fertilize and cut. There may also be some small drainage works and re levelling.
Summer 2007 has been the wettest summer on record and not the best for a completely re-seeded area and the site is in flood plain and is expected to be wet when the River Avon is high.
Having commissioned Ecological and Topographic surveys on St Nicholas Park and Myton Fields, these are now complete. Results of the Ecology Survey can be seen in the documents section below.
