The Private Sector Housing team can take action on
- buildings which are unoccupied and which are not effectively secured against unauthorised entry, or which are likely to become a danger to public health;
- dwellings which have been unoccupied for a long time and which could be brought back into use.
Buildings which are not effectively secured can be boarded-up to prevent unauthorised entry or to prevent them becoming a danger to public health. Costs are normally re-charged to the owner.
We will deal with long term empty private dwellings. Where dwellings have been vacant for more than 6 months, or have been abandoned by their owners, the Council will endeavour to ensure that they are brought back into use with a combination of advice and support to owners. Where owners are not responsive, enforcement action will be taken.
The Council recently launched it's Empty Homes Strategy (750kb, PDF) which sets out a number of strategic objectives and an action plan.
