The rent and other charges payable for council homes and garages are reviewed annually. Any increases are payable from the first week in April, the start of the financial year. Prior to any changes being implemented all tenants receive a minimum of 4 weeks notice giving them the opportunity to give notice to terminate their tenancy if they do not wish to pay the new charges.
The process for reviewing the rents involves councillors making a recommendation as to the percentage increase needed in housing rents for the forthcoming financial year, normally in February each year.
The rent setting report above takes into consideration:
- The budget needed to manage and maintain the council's housing and garage stock.
- Government rules on the rent restructuring of social housing (2002 – 2012)
- Government guidance on subsidies
Further information on the Government’s rent restructuring policy can be found at the Department for Communities and Local Government website.
