Section 24 Public Sewers
Section 24 Sewers are particular sewers which serve groups of properties which were in occupation and separate ownership prior to the coming into effect of the 1936 Public Health Act. They are deemed public sewers and therefore the responsibility of Severn Trent Water. Maps are not available for these sewers.
Private Sewers
All other serwers are private and are the responsibility of the owners/occupiers of the properties being served by that pipework. This responsibility extends up to where the sewer joins the public system, which may be some distance away from the house(s) served, and may even be under the roadway or someone else's land.
Blockages
We will investigate reported blockages to determine the position and if found to be on the public system will inform Severn Trent Water. If the blockage is found to be on a private system of drainage, all the properties connected above the blockage are responsible for clearing it. We will provide advice and, if necessary, serve statutory notices requiring the clearance of blockages, depending upon the circumstances.
Frequent Blockages
Where blockages are more frequent than should be expected, we may be able to survey the area by CCTV to check the integrity of the sewers. This service is not offered on request. Work is prioritised.
If a fault is discovered, the responsibility lies with those connected above the fault. We will assist in organising the repair either with an individual, provided they are willing to take sole responsibility, or via the service of a statutory notice for group responsibility.
Smells
We will investigate reports of odd smells either from inside or outside the property, council or private, particularly if the nuisance is either persistent or re-occurs on a frequent basis. This type of problem can be very difficult to isolate but where possible remedial action will be suggested.
Cellar Flooding
We will investigate incidents of the flooding of cellars and other below ground level rooms. It provides analysis of samples in an attempt to identify sources of the flooding and offers suggetions of remedial works or further investigations.
