Building Control News

Recent Enforcement action successful

We recently successfully prosecuted a local builder for undertaking unsafe electrical works. The work was in a family home and it was left in a dangerous condition. A Council appointed electrician identified eighteen faults with the electrics, of which eight were rated as "code 1". This is the most serious type of fault which could potentially cause electric shock or fire.

In light of the seriousness of the situation the Council undertook enforcement action against the builder. On 26th. June, at Stratford Magistrates Court, the builder was fined £700 and £615 costs for a breach of Part P of the Building Regulations.

Changes to fees

We are in the process of undertaking a review of the fees that we charge for applications. The present fee scale has remained unchanged since 2003. Details of any changes will be posted here when finalised.

Building Control Online

We now have an online fee calculator, which can help you to calculate our fees when submitting a building regulations application.

For some time now it has been possible to search for building regulations applications online using our web register. The web register can now be used to book inspections, sending inspection details directly to the building control officers, and providing you with confirmation of the booking. The web register allows you to check the progress of your application. It can also be used to discover what building work is being carried out anywhere in the district. This service now replaces the paper format commencement list and completion list.

An introduction to the Building Regulations

The Building Regulations are made under powers provided in the Building Act 1984. They apply to the majority of building projects. Their ultimate aim is to ensure the health, safety and welfare of people in and around buildings. They also provide standards for energy conservation and access and facilities for disabled people.

Anyone wishing to carry out work which is covered by the Building Regulations must ensure it complies with the regulations and submit a valid application or initial notice prior to commencing the work.
