Hygiene Inspection Rating

Warwick District Council has a scheme to publicise hygiene inspection ratings of food premises within the District. The businesses to which it is appropriate to issue awards are those where open foodstuffs are handled.

Many local authorities throughout the Country have such schemes in place which have shown many and varied benefits including:

  • the encouragement of food businesses to improve their food hygiene/safety standards
  • to provide additional recognition and reward to those businesses that consistently achieve high standards
  • to provide an additional mechanism for the public to make an informed choice of where they eat.

The information given is gained from programmed food hygiene inspections of food businesses within the District by Environmental Health Practitioners (EHPs).

The rating will be determined by assessment of:

  • Hygiene and safety, including food handling practices/procedures and temperature control
  • Structure, including cleanliness, layout, condition of structure, lighting, ventilation etc., and
  • Confidence in management, taken from their record of compliance, technical knowledge, food safety management skills and so on.

All assessments for awards are made at unannounced inspections so that food safety management can be evaluated under normal operating circumstances. The food business rating will be assessed as gold, silver, bronze or no award.

The scheme started during Food Safety Week (12-18 June 2006); from then on all premises that have been inspected have been given a Hygiene Inspection Rating.  Gold, Silver and Bronze Food businesses are encouraged to display their rating certificate within their respective premises.

'No Award' premises will not be issued with a certificate.

All sub-standard premises are revisited by EHPs to ensure compliance by issuing notices and taking other legal enforcement measures.

Existing Award Schemes

Warwick District Council’s Food Safety Team recognises excellence in local food businesses by running the nationally recognised Heartbeat Award Scheme.

The scheme is initiated by an unannounced routine food hygiene inspection and relates to food businesses which prepare and serve high risk foods. The award is valid from inspection to inspection and will be removed if standards are found to have slipped.

The following criteria apply:
