Text summary of the Warwick tour
We start on the bridge for a view of the Castle and walk back to Mill Street to visit the lovely gardens at the bottom of the street which include some ancient stocks, the medieval punishment vareity not the night scented variety. We continue up to the East Gate where in 1916 a local tram careered out of control into what was then a pub (no one was hurt). Taking a right up The Butts we cross into the narrow footpath known as Tink a Tank to St Mary’s Church where we visit the Beauchamp chapel to see the medieval and Tudor tombs including Robert Dudley – favourite to Elizabeth 1st. The route also includes the Lord Leycester Hospital set up by Robert Dudley as a home for retired soldiers, the Market Square and ends looking into the dungeons of the old jail.
