Still need a red box or bag?
Collection sessions will be held throughout 2008 on the first Saturday of each month (July - December) between 10am -1pm (depending on stock levels). Please visit the Warwick District Council offices, Riverside House, Leamington Spa CV32 5HZ. Alternatively you can place an order with the Sort-It team - however we are unable to give a timescale for delivery at the present time.
Still need a food caddy?
We ordered a limited supply of food caddies, as although they are useful containers they are not essential. Some households prefer to place food waste straight into their green bin either loose or wrapped in paper. Some households are reusing containers such as ice cream tubs as a food caddy to contain food waste before placing it in their green bin.
We have hopefully contacted all residents that have previously ordered a caddy and invited them to attend collection sessions to pick up their caddy. The good news is we do have some surplus stock available. We do not have the resources to deliver any but they are available for collection (along with red boxes and bags) on the first Saturday of each month between 10am and 1pm from Riverside House (starting in August) whilst stocks last. PLEASE NOTE: To avoid disappointment do not come to Riverside House at any other time to collect one as they will not be available.
Summer is here - worried about smelly bins?
If you are worried about smelly bins then follow these few simple guidelines to reduce the problem:
- Wrap food waste in old newspaper before placing it in your grey rubbish bin one week or your green bin the next.
- Don’t leave leftover food, or uneaten cat or dog food, uncovered and open to flies before it is put into your bin.
- Try to keep your bin out of direct sunlight and away from open windows or doors.
- Keep the bin lid completely shut to reduce flies, maggots and smells.
- Compost as much organic waste as possible.
- Empty solids from used disposable nappies into your toilet before bagging and placing in your grey bin. Consider using reusable nappies.
- Don’t put un-bagged animal excrement into your grey bin. If your house generates a lot of animal waste, you could take it to the Household Waste Recycling Centre for disposal.
- You can buy Carbon filters that fit on to the inside lid of your bin to absorb smells. 'Odour eater' foot insoles can be used in the same way.
- Regularly clean and disinfect your bins.
Becky Davies, the council’s Recycling Officer said "The hot summer weather does tend to make rubbish smell more. That was true even when the black bags were collected once a week. With the wheelie bins, bagging up anything that is likely to rot or smell, and making sure that nothing stops the lid closing properly, is pretty effective."

Top tips to 'slim your bin'
Reduce the amount you throw away - tips from the Sort it Team
- Look to reuse before you recycle - plastic bottles make great covers for young plants.
- Use rechargeable batteries.
- Buy energy efficient light bulbs - lasting 10 years they will save you money.
- Modern cotton nappies have come a long way since the old terry squares - why not give them a try?
- Use the milkman for deliveries of milk and juice - the bottles are reused many times.
- Stop junk mail - have your name removed from mailing lists. Write to the Mailing Preference Service, DMA House, 70 Margaret Street, London W1W 8SS or visit www.mpsonline.org.uk
- According to WRAP around a third of all the food we buy ends up being thrown away and most of this could have been eaten – it’s not just peelings, cores and bones. 90% of us just don’t realise how much good food we throw out, yet in the UK we throw away 6.7 million tonnes of food each year. - Ensure the lid is always kept shut. It will help to keep out insects and animals.

- If possible try to store the green bin in a shady area away from direct sunlight.
