The demand for pest control services in Warwick district increased significantly last year. From nearly 1700 requests in 2006/07, demand shot up to over 2800 in 2007/8. As a result we are making some changes in order to meet these requirements.
A wide variety of pests are currently treated, including rats, mice, fleas and bedbugs. Councils are not legally required to provide a pest control service but do so where there is a significant public health risk. The council makes a charge of £52 for all treatments (not per visit) except for rats and bedbugs, which are free of charge. Where we do make a charge this is reduced to half price for pensioners and free to those on certain income related benefits.
As a result of this increase in demand we are no longer able to provide a service for the treatment of wasps. There are many commercial exterminators available, and as the wasps do not carry disease, or cause damage to property, a decision has been made to discontinue this service.
Councillor Michael Kinson, Portfolio Holder for Environment said: "We regret having to withdraw this service, but there really is no alternative. With demand for extermination of disease carrying pests at an all time high we have had to make some changes to meet the demand."
DIY and private company treatments
Residents can treat for wasps using suitable products available from garden centres and DIY stores or use private pest control companies. Details of some local companies can be found via Yellow Pages and on our pest and nuisance page. Residents using private pest control companies are advised to check the price and what the service covers before agreeing to the treatment. We would encourage residents not to use pesticides unless really necessary.
