Consultation on draft planning and development documents for the Station Area and former Ford foundry site in Leamington Spa launched on Friday 13th June.
Working with Birmingham based planning consultants GVA Grimley, the council has prepared a planning brief to guide future development in the area around Leamington station and the former Ford Foundry site.
This has been a collaborative process involving landowners, stakeholders, civic and amenity groups and officers from the district and county councils. The Council approved the draft brief at a Special Executive Committee in May.
Consultation and exhibition
Public consultation on this ran from 13th June until 25th July 2008.
A public exhibition was held in the Royal Priors shopping centre on Sunday 15th June between 10.30am - 4.30pm. Staff from GVA Grimley and the council were on hand to discuss the proposals.
Endorsing the public consultation, Councillor John Hammon, Development Portfolio Holder said: "The council is keen to promote and enhance the image and character of this area. We wish to see high quality landmark buildings with a mix of uses and improved linkages to other areas of the town. The consultation gives everybody the chance to have their say on the development proposals, helping to shape the regeneration of this key area of Leamington, and we look forward to hearing people’s views."
Full details and technical specifications are now available.
Background
The preparation of this planning brief follows the closure of the Ford Foundry in July 2007. At that time, Warwick District Council committed itself to regenerating the area. We approached Advantage West Midlands (the Regional Development Agency) for funding support and subsequently appointed consultants GVA Grimley to assist in preparing a planning brief for the area.
The planning brief covers a wide area including the Foundry site, Leamington rail station, other land along the Old Warwick Road and land to the north of the railway line including the Stagecoach Depot. The total area of the site is about 20 hectares (50 acres). The brief contains a package of proposals including new homes, offices, hotels, car parking for the railway station and environmental improvements.
A final version will be published in the autumn. This will be adopted as Supplementary Planning Guidance which will provide a template for future development and planning applications for the Station Area.
Copies of the brief will available at all local libraries, council offices and from our Riverside House office.
