A maintenance and improvement programme totalling nearly £2.2m has been agreed by the Council’s Executive Committee.
The programme of works concentrates on three multi-storey car parks, Covent Garden and St Peter’s in Leamington and Linen Street in Warwick.
Funding for the works comes from a number of sources
- The general car park maintenance budget
- Re-investment of above inflation increases in off-street car park charges over the last four years
- Sale of Bedford Street Car Park, Leamington Spa
- Limited borrowing
The works are a vital part of modernising and extending the life of these three essential facilities, helping to ensure their continued operations for the next twenty years. Works to Covent Garden multi-storey car will result in a significant enhancement including new lighting, redecoration and signage.
Councillor Michael Kinson, Portfolio Holder for Environment said: "One of our key aims is to support the development of thriving town centres. Good quality car parking is a vital factor in supporting this. It is therefore essential that we continue the investment we have been making over the last few years in our car parks. This includes the introduction of ‘Pay on Foot’ in both St Peter’s and Covent Garden car parks, the upgrade of Abbey End car park and new parking facilities in Warwick at St Mary’s Lands, adjoining the Racecourse.
Investment and improvements to the quality of our off-street parking provision is essential if we are to continue to compete with other town centres where large investment in town centre developments has resulted in improvements to their car parking facilities."
The work is scheduled to start later this year and be completed in 2009 / 2010.
