Air pollution monitoring in Warwick
|
|
Part IV of the Environment Act, 1995, places a duty on local authorities to periodically review and assess the air quality within their area. This involves looking at present and likely future air quality against air quality standards and objectives.
Where it appears that the air quality objectives will not be met by the target dates, local authorities must declare an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA) and develop action plans to try to meet the air quality objectives.
The main sources of air pollution in Warwick district are road traffic emissions resulting in certain areas high levels of oxides of nitrogen - NOx/NO2.
The monitoring network operated by Warwick District Council consists of a continuous NOx/NO2 monitoring station in Jury Street Warwick, a continuous monitoring station in Hamilton Terrace, Leamington Spa, and the use of NO2 passive monitoring diffusion tubes in various locations in the district.
As a result of the monitoring and computer modelling of the results it has been decided to extend the existing Air Quality Management Area in Warwick which previously included only Jury Street and High street to include other streets in the town centre.
