This year, bonfire night in Warwick District was about more than rockets, bonfires, and ‘penny for the guy’. An important air quality consultation for all local residents was launched on 5th November.

Our Environmental Health Department has been monitoring air quality in the district for almost 10 years. One of the main results of this monitoring has been concern about the high levels of nitrogen dioxide, mainly from car exhausts, that are above guideline levels in certain areas.

In December 2004 the council designated 3 areas within the district as Air Quality Management Areas (AQMA). These are

  • Leamington Spa – encompassing several properties at the roadside of Bath Street, High Street and Clemens Street
  • Barford – encompassing several properties along the A429 and properties in Church Street, close to its junction with the A429
  • Warwick – encompassing several properties in the High Street and Jury Street

Consequently officers have produced a draft Action Plan to improve air quality in these areas, and we need residents views.

Measures in the plan include

  • Reducing the amount of traffic and easing congestion
  • Reducing health risks, particularly to vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly, and people with heart and lung conditions
  • Expansion of the scheme in Warwick

The full details and online questionnaire are now available. Copies of the questionnaire are also available via all local libraries.

The consultation runs until 14th December.
